Recently, the Low-Carbon Institute, a subsidiary of the National Energy Group, along with its affiliated chemical companies, Yulin Chemical, and Kehuan Group, successfully conducted the trial operation of the world's first coal chemical and new energy coupling system based on full-duration energy storage.
Under the "dual carbon" goals, China is accelerating the transition from "dual control of energy consumption" to "dual control of carbon emissions." By introducing green electricity, green heat, and green hydrogen, coupling coal chemical industry with new energy can significantly reduce carbon emissions from coal chemical production and promote the absorption of new energy. As one of the ten key scientific and technological research projects of the National Energy Group, the "Research and Demonstration of Key Technologies for Coupling Coal Chemical Industry and New Energy" project is jointly undertaken by the Low-Carbon Institute, chemical companies, Yulin Chemical, Kehuan Group Longyuan Environmental Protection, and National Energy Zhishen, aiming to solve the matching problem between "unstable and discontinuous new energy and coal chemical equipment that requires safe and stable continuous operation." By utilizing the carbon-based high-temperature heat storage materials and high-reliability microgrid technology independently developed by the National Energy Group, combined with intrinsically safe flow batteries and water electrolysis hydrogen production technology, the project aims to open up the entire process of green electricity, green hydrogen, and green heat coupled with coal chemical equipment, establish relevant standards, regulations, and practical experience, and explore a truly feasible new path for integrated development.
To ensure the project's timely trial operation, since the official start of construction in September 2023, the project team has adhered to the safety management regulations of the Low-Carbon Institute and the local area, completing the demonstration project construction tasks with high standards and high quality. During the trial operation, the Low-Carbon Institute project team worked closely with Yulin Chemical, Longyuan Environmental Protection, and various suppliers, making full preparations and firmly upholding the safety bottom line of the trial operation. They overcame difficulties such as the high difficulty and safety risks of hydrogen production system debugging, and solved problems such as large leakage in the heat storage module and insulation sealing of electric heating wire plates. Finally, the flow battery completed the charge-discharge test, the heat storage unit successfully produced steam, and the water electrolysis unit produced qualified hydrogen, achieving the project's first successful trial operation. This laid a solid foundation for the subsequent joint trial operation of "photovoltaic + energy storage + hydrogen production + heat storage + intelligent microgrid."
