Recently, China Mobile Zhejiang Company completed and launched the largest 5G private network for power in China at Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant. Over 3900 5G pico-cells were opened within the plant, covering all areas of the nine generating units of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, with a coverage area exceeding 20 square kilometers. It also achieves interconnectivity with the nuclear power management network, administrative telephone network, industrial video network, and other networks.
It is understood that Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant is China's first 300,000-kilowatt pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant, independently designed, constructed, and operated, located in Haishen County, Jiaxing City. The Qinshan Nuclear Power 5G private network adopts an independent networking architecture, with a downlink peak rate of up to 1.7Gbps and an uplink rate of up to 380Mbps. Based on the 5G private network, more than ten digital applications have been developed, including radiation source supervision, radiation monitoring instruments, intelligent video monitoring, smart lighting, smart water meters, and intelligent welding. These empower various scenarios of nuclear power production, assisting Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in its digital transformation and enhancing the high-quality and safe operation capabilities of nuclear power units.
In June 2022, China Mobile Zhejiang Company and Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant launched a cooperation project to build a 5G production private network that meets the third-level requirements of network security protection and covers all nine generating units of the nuclear power base. During construction, to ensure that the 5G signal would not cause electromagnetic interference to the power plant's electrical and instrumentation equipment, repeated electromagnetic interference retests were conducted on-site with 5G base stations and 5G terminals in cooperation with the plant, and 14 types of safety protection equipment were deployed.
In addition, considering the special nature of the nuclear power industry and nuclear power plant environment, China Mobile Zhejiang Company has strived for excellence in the construction of the 5G private network in terms of signal strength, signal-to-noise ratio, transmission rate, stability, and jitter time. A series of difficulties were overcome, including nuclear island signal transmission, network power supply, equipment heat dissipation, and fiber optic routing. Through innovative technological transformation of adding optical fiber cores using through-holes, in cooperation with the plant, China Mobile Zhejiang Company improved the 5G transmission rate in the reactor building by 50%, successfully solving the problem of signal transmission from the nuclear reactor building, becoming the first engineering application in domestically operating nuclear power units.
In order to complete the challenging construction task of "completing one unit's overhaul for each unit," the project team collaborated with Party branches from China Mobile Integration, China Nuclear Engineering, China Mobile Zhejiang Company, China Nuclear Repair, and AsiaInfo Technology to form a joint Party member commando team. A full-process implementation plan was developed, covering aspects such as equipment installation, cable laying, optical fiber splicing, cable termination, equipment debugging, electromagnetic retesting, and signal testing and acceptance, successfully achieving the goal of completing the construction of all nine units in a single overhaul. This also created a record of completing the overhaul of one unit in 15 days and the deployment of 5G for two units in 28 days, advancing the project construction schedule by 16 months.
From May to August 2024, the various units of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant completed preliminary acceptance and entered the trial operation period. During this period, the 5G private network operated stably, and various departments implemented more than ten digital applications based on the 5G private network, including digital operation procedures, iExecution, ASP-1, radiation source supervision, and radiation monitoring instruments, fully meeting the application requirements of mobile communication, electronic fences, video monitoring, and the Internet of Things.
