With the arrival of high temperatures in summer, electricity consumption will peak. How will China ensure energy and electricity supply during this summer's peak demand? At a press conference on June 18, Li Chao, spokesperson for the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said that efforts will be made in production and supply, peak capacity, power allocation, and improving demand-side management to better ensure the needs of people's livelihood and key electricity consumers.
During this summer's peak demand period, temperatures in most parts of the country will be higher than in previous years; summer arrived earlier in East China and southern regions, and some areas may experience intense high-temperature weather. Li Chao stated that summer peak electricity supply must fully consider the impact of extreme weather events and the huge electricity demand for cooling, continuously dynamically assessing the situation and making sufficient preparations.

Li Chao, spokesperson for the National Development and Reform Commission, said that by carrying out refined management of electricity demand, the needs of people's livelihood and key energy consumers can be better ensured. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen monitoring, early warning, and duty, and make every effort to ensure people's livelihood and key energy consumption under extreme conditions.

The NDRC will continue to play the role of the inter-ministerial coordination mechanism for coal, electricity, oil, gas, and transportation, focusing on ensuring stable coal production and supply, striving to improve the power generation capacity at peak times in key regions and periods, promoting the full generation of various power sources such as hydropower, nuclear power, wind power, solar power, and thermal power, and the scientific and sufficient use of energy storage facilities to play a peak support role.

Currently, the 22 power plants under unified dispatch in Hubei have a coal inventory of 5.878 million tons, which is enough for 22 days at 85% load and 40 days according to national standards. To ensure electricity demand during the peak summer period, energy storage projects are being rapidly constructed throughout Zhejiang. Recently, the 10-kilovolt Zhicheng energy storage power station in Changxing has been upgraded, extending its discharge time by double and providing more stable and reliable power supply. In Hangzhou's Yuhang district, a "light storage dynamic capacity expansion" project has been put into use, which can automatically store and release surplus electricity.

Zhou Bozhi, a staff member of the operation and maintenance department of the State Grid Hangzhou Yuhang District Power Supply Company, said: "When customer electricity demand increases, the energy storage system will automatically release electricity, playing a role in 'peak shaving and valley filling.'"

The NDRC stated that it will strengthen cross-provincial power dispatch, utilize differences in electricity load characteristics in various regions, and actively carry out cross-provincial and inter-regional mutual assistance through market-oriented methods such as long-term power contracts and spot markets. Up to now, the national power generation capacity has maintained rapid growth, with 198 million tons of coal in stock at power plants under unified dispatch, and the hydropower inflow and water storage situation is better than the same period last year, providing a good foundation for this year's summer peak electricity supply.
